La Union may be best known for its beaches and surfing, but there’s more to do in this premium summer destination! There are various activities for you to do here this summer. If you’re the type to enjoy going on lengthy food trips, engaging in outdoor activities, or even giving back to mother nature then La Union definitely has something for you to do. Check out this list of things to do here in La Union.
Go on a Pinoy-themed Food Trip
Instead of finding the usual rows of fast-food restaurants, you’ll be delighted at the sight of a selection of independent restaurants serving nutritious food and anything—from regional to international cuisine! Going for a food trip would be one of the most memorable things to do in La Union, whether you’re with a group of friends, your family, or a special someone.
Looking for a chill place to dine? Check out Tagpuan sa San Juan. They serve well-known Filipino staples at highly affordable prices. You may want to try some of the classics (adobo and bagnet) that are sure to complete your La Union experience.
For dessert, head on over to Halo-Halo de Iloko at San Fernando. With ingredients sourced locally, you’ll satisfy your tastebuds with arguably the best Halo-Halo in the country! Saging from Agoo, Ube from San Gabriel, pastillas made from carabao’s milk, and creamy homemade ice cream sets this Halo Halo apart from the rest!
Pick Grapes at Gapuz Grapes Farm
Did you know that there have been vineyards in La Union since the 1970s? The majority of these family-owned properties are located in the Bauang municipality and are accessible to the general public. Gapuz Grapes Farm is a place you can visit if you’re looking for probinsya-themed things to do in La Union. Take a tour of the area, talk to the farmers, and discover how the ripe grapes become wine.
If you want to pick grapes, the only harvest season is from March to May, so it’s better to call the farm in advance. Admission is free, but there is a little fee if you want to take photos (you’ll surely want to!) You can also bring some locally produced wines home as a memento.
Help Save the Sea Turtles with Project Curma
Vacation can be a way for you to give back to Mother Nature, too. Volunteer at Project Curma, a nonprofit organization that was established in 2010 with a primary focus on pawikan (sea turtles). A marine turtle hatchery is located at the team’s headquarters in La Union, where volunteers and locals collected turtle eggs around the La Union shoreline.
Between September and March is turtle hatching season. If you happen to be in La Union during these months and would like to help, get in touch with them on Facebook. You can volunteer to join the patrols and lead cute little newborn turtles back to the sea once they are ready to emerge from their shells!
There’s more to LU than its famous waves and its vast stretches of beaches. If you’re looking for unique things to do in La Union, you’ll surely find something that fills the body, the mind, and the soul!
